A wheel-chair bound girl, who did not attend offline classes due to suffering from the medical condition ‘spina bafida’ for the past two years, and due to Covid-19, scored 363 out of 625 marks in the SSLC exam. SBO results from neural tube defect. Neural tube is the structure in an embryo that develops into the brain, spinal cord, and coverings. Few indications of the syndrome include Abnormal tuft of hair, collection of fat, small dimple or birthmark. Some of the symptoms noted include Foot deformity, Back pain, Weakness or numbness in hands or legs and Pain in the back of the legs.

Fathima Hania Samah, a student of Ansar English Medium School, Bajpe, Mangalore, is suffering from the condition since birth, and as a result, she requires a wheelchair to move around. Fathima was born with a birth defect, but despite her physical shortcomings, she was eager to study. Due to pandemics, she could not concentrate on her studies, as online classes could not help in any manner’ therefore she could manage her studies on her own. Fathima never attended a single SSLC class in person, but she prepared by borrowing old notes and books from her friends. She lost her father in October 2022 due to a heart attack, which was another blow to her studies. Despite her birth defect, pandemic, not going to school and the death of her father, she took the examination without the help of a scribe and obtained 363 marks out of 625.

Edunews congratulated Fathima on her accomplishment despite several odds including incessant medical problems. If the mother minds, she can dismantle any barrier. Mother Aysha can plan for future studies of Fathima Hania Samah. Edunews wish a bright future to Fathima
