According to Ministry of Education sources, the top 20 percentile students of each education board will be eligible to seek admission in Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) and National Institute of Technologies (NITs). Such students can appear for JEE Advanced even though they have not scored 75% marks in 12th standard.

The decision comes in line with the constant demands for relaxing the eligibility criteria for JEE (Advanced), which requires at least 75% marks in aggregate in the class 12 examination conducted by the respective education boards. There are primarily three national boards in India namely CBSE, CISCE, and NIOS.  In addition, UPMSP, GSEB Board, PSEB, WBCHSE, Tripura board, BSEAP (Andhra pradesh board), JKBOSE, MBOSE (Meghalaya board), Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM), HPBOSE, BSEB, HBSE, MPBSE Board, WBBSE, BSE Odisha, Telangana State Board (TSBIE), CGBSE, CHSE Odisha, Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan Board, TBSE, MBSE, AHSEC, UBSE, MSBSHSE, RBSE, COHSEM, SEBA, BIEAP, JAC, DGE Tamil Nadu, DHSE Kerala, GBSHSE, KSEEB, NBSE etc  also cater to the needs.

The 20 percentile criteria will help those candidates who are short of 75 per cent aggregate in their class 12 examination conducted by the said boards.  Decisions are taken since many of the top 20 percentile candidates in a number of state boards score below 75 per cent marks or 350 marks, the ministry decided that if a candidate is in the top 20 percentile he or she is eligible. It may be noted that earlier, the candidates with the score of less than 75% of marks in the board examination were unable to penetrate in to IITs? NITs even though they have score top 20 percentile in the JEE (Advance).  The decision of the central government regarding this relaxation is a respite to many such candidates, who can pursue their dream education in the institutes of national importance.

A far as JEE-Main examination the media bring out the latest  announcement:

JEE Main 2023: Bombay HC Refuses To Postpone January Session; Hearing On Eligibility Matter Next Month

The Bombay High Court   on Tuesday, 10th January 2023 refused to postpone Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main 2023 scheduled to be conducted in January 2023.   The court in its ruling has stated that any ruling would have a cascading effect on future examinations   to be conducted by the NTA, therefore the court decided not intervene even if an educational policy is bad.

A bench headed by acting Chief Justice SV Gangpurwala and Justice Sandeep V Marne ruled on a  Public Interest Litigation  filed by  child rights activist Anubha Srivastava Sahai against  National Testing Agency.  The petition challenged the National Testing Agency`s (NTA) December 15 notification scheduling the examination between January 24 to 31, 2023. The petitioner had urged NTA on the following:

  • To postpone the January exam and
  • To remove the 75 per cent eligibility criterion.

The petitioner Sahai claimed   on the following grounds:

  1. Many class 12th students will be appearing for their practical exams, vivas, etc. in January 2023.
  2. This will coincide with the JEE Main 2023 January session, as result many students will not be able to fare better in the JEE (Mains).
  3. Even the HSC, CBSE, ICSE (class 12th) exams are scheduled to begin on 1st February, 2023 which will make the exam calendar chaotic for class 12 students.

 After hearing the case threadbare, the bench has decided   the following;

  • No postponement of the JEE exam.
  • The extraordinary circumstances do not appear to exist for restraining respondents from holding January examination.
  • Lakhs of students must have been preparing for exam
  • PIL may affect 50,000 students, but not affect 5 lakh students
  • Courts ought not to intervene, even if an educational policy is not good
  • For this purpose, the court added that there is a judgment in SC, which states that even if a policy is not good, the Court cannot intervene
  • Refused to defer the JEE Mains examination scheduled later this month which is a pan-India examination as it would affect lakhs of IIT aspirants.
  • The Public Interest Litigation wanted the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains to be deferred till March.
