Mangalore University is the gem of coastal Karnataka. Its campus at Mangalagangothri, located about 20 km to the southeast of the historic coastal town of Mangalore sets the tone for the educational endeavours of the three districts under the jurisdiction of the University. Along with producing scholars who have achieved great success, the varsity has also produced great players, athletes, Olympians, Asian Games Medalists, Ekalavya, Arujna and Khel Ratna awardees.
The university in Mangalore is located on a picturesque campus that sprawls over 353 acres, from where one can witness the confluence of the river Nethravathi with the Arabian Sea on one side and the cloud-capped Western Ghats on the other. Growing from a modest Postgraduate Centre of the University of Mysore, it has now become a major focal point of education in the state of Karnataka.
Starting from only three postgraduate departments, the Varsity now has 28 Departments offering 39 PG programmes, 30 Ph D programmes, has two constituent colleges (at Mangalore and Madikeri), five autonomous colleges and over 211 colleges affiliated to it. Besides, it is also one of the premier Universities in the country accredited by NAAC with an ‘A’ grade.
The Vision
The vision of the Universality in Mangalore is to evolve as a national centre of advance studies and to cultivate quality human resource and to this effect, the faculty here strives to perform. The university has been ranked number two in Chemical Science research at the national level and number one in International collaboration by SCOPUS, which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources. Mangalore University also stands 24th among the top 50 institutes of higher learning in the country.
The University maintains a close connection with the public of the coastal region and Kodagu through meaningful programmes, extension activities, Endowment Chairs, Study Centres and through University-Industry interaction.
Internationally recognised national research centres
The varsity is a self-contained facility that provides all the essential facilities and infrastructure for the pursuit of excellence in higher education. The university has three internationally recognized national science research centres on campus including, the Microtron, Centre for Application of Radioisotope and Radiation Technology (CARRT), Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity (CARER) , Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology Cell (OASTC). Besides, sophisticated research equipment is also housed in the USIC and PURSE labs on the campus.
The University in Mangalore has received major grants from the UGC, DST, Govt. of Karnataka, Department of Ocean Development, Department of Electronics, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Space, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Atomic Energy and other nodal agencies through which the university has gained national and global visibility.

Interesting Fact: The present Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University Dr Palale Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya happens to be the first academician from the earlier Dakshina Kannada district including Udupi to ascent to this post. Besides, he also happens to be a first batch MCom student of Mangalore University in 1982, securing the first rank with a gold medal and also obtaining his PhD from the university in 1992 in the area of consumer behaviour.
