Finland`s Education System

Finland remains the happiest country in the world. One of the major reasons for Finland being happy is undoubtedly the education system.

Finland was recently named Finland`s Education System by the United Nations World Happiness Report, for the fourth time consecutively. India has ranked 139 in 2021, and 146 in 2022 published in the 10th World Happiness Report. It has been released in March 2022. India’s rank in 2020 was 144. India’s overall rank 2018-2020 – 139. Happiness focuses on six factors, they are Levels of GDP, life expectancy, generosity; social support, freedom, and corruption. Finland remains the happiest country in the world. It is the fourth time; Finland found its name at the top. It maintains the same status in 2022 as well. One of the major reasons for Finland being happy is undoubtedly the education system. Its education system is the best in the world and it influences upon the aforesaid parameters.

Finland is in Northern Europe and is a member state of the Europe Union European. Finland is a highly industrialized country. Finland has been top of the list of least corrupt countries on the corruption perception index more times than any other country.

Reasons for the best Finnish education system:

  • Children go to school when they are 7 years old, with the option to attend preschool. Finland`s education system makes children be highly creative and resourceful, as they have the freedom to learn beyond the formal curriculum at a young age.
  • Students appear for a centralized matriculation exam, when they are 16, to qualify for university admission. No pressure and a little homework make them be not only creative but also resourceful
  • Free Education Access from Pre-Primary to Higher to Finnish Citizens and to those from EU/EEA countries as education is an equal right for everyone.
  •  All children are taught in one classroom irrespective of their learning curve. Students with learning or behavioral disabilities undergo an extra year of education
  • The government pays an allowance of about 500 euros for each child to learn free of cost
  •  93% of Finns graduate high school, which is a milestone for a teenager. The dropout rate is abysmally low.
  •  43% attend vocational school and the rest opt for university training
  • Students learn more languages in school. The Finnish language is on the entry into school. In the 9th year, they study Swedish, Finland’s second official language, at 11, they learn English and many take their fourth language at 13. Students are tested on their first two languages in a matriculation exam for admission into the university. 
  •  Elementary school students get 75 minutes of recess a day in Finland as against 27 minutes in the US. They get a 15-minute break after every lesson. Outdoor physical activity is highly encouraged, and some lessons are taught in the classroom.
  •  Teachers only spend 4 hours a day in the classroom on building curriculum and take 2 hours a week for professional development.
  • Teachers enjoy the freedom of selecting the best educational methods for their students. The national curriculum gives guidelines for teaching based on the curriculum. 
  • Teachers in Finland are master`s degree holders and they are capable to plan quality curricula and do assessments objectively
  • The top 10% of graduates become Teachers. One can become a doctor easily but the candidates have to undergo rigorous procedures
  • Teachers are effectively given status equivalent to doctors and lawyers. Teachers in Finland are highly educated and they are regarded as respected professionals.
  • Teachers stick with students for a specific period. In Finland, the same teacher has to be the group of students for five years. This helps the teachers to understand each one of the students.    

Despite the pandemic’s devastation, Finland remains the happiest country in the world due to many factors and one such factor is education.  This is high time for the biggest democratic country to embrace Finland`s model so that it can also clean the education system
