Introduction: Dr. B R Ambedkar School of Economics University is abbreviated as a BASE. It is an emerging institute of excellence in economic research and education. It was created mainly to fulfil the need of an eminent institution in the field of economics that caters to the demands of the rapidly changing and growing India. BASE university carves out and nurtures future economists and policymakers by imbibing in them the dynamics and challenges of various countries, especially India. The country is aim at 5 trillion worth of economy by 2023, for which the BASE University iron out all the wrinkles in the journey of attaining the set path at the micro-level.  It endeavours to develop an excellent model of pedagogy and research in economics and its allied fields. The curriculum of the programs in Economics is designed to train students in the fields of growing importance, in virtually every modern career, be it corporate, academia, analytics or public policy. The expertise of the students is enhanced through exposure to the latest theoretical and empirical research and thereby it enhances the capacity to build a strong base economically.

For this purpose, the Government of Karnataka constituted a committee led by Shri. S.V. Ranganath, Vice Chairman, KSHEC and former Chief Secretary to the Government of Karnataka. The state in turn accorded approval to establish Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics University on a model similar to the London School of Economics. Further earmarked Rs 350 crores and allotted 43.45 acres of land in the Jnana Bharathi Campus of Bangalore University. 

 Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics University, Bangalore is registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 (Act No.17 of 1960). The foundation stone of the University was laid by the Hon. President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee on 14 April 2017, at Banquet Hall, Vidhana Soudha, Bangalore to mark the 125th birth anniversary of  Baba sahib, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Dr. B.R Ambedkar School of Economics, Bengaluru, became a Unitary University under the Government of Karnataka in the field of Economics and Social Sciences vide notification no. ED 41 UBV 2018(P-2) dated 30 October 2019.

The admission is based on both merit and the Central Universities Common Entrance Test. It accepts admissions based on merit. The application mode is online. The first batch of B.Sc. (Honours) Economics was admitted in June-July 2017, based on the all-India rank in CUET (Central Universities Entrance Test) conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority. The Academic session of the University was formally inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Former Prime Minister of India at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan on 4th October 2017. Three batches of students have successfully completed the programs offered by BASE University. Students are given a well-rounded academic experience and aided by experienced and well-qualified faculty. BASE also offers scholarship opportunities to Minority as well as SC/ST students

Infrastructure: The BASE University was planned in line with the London School of Economics. It has 13 blocks built at an approximate cost of Rs 250 crore. The academic activities commenced in 2017 at a temporary building with an intake of 50 students and the institute got the unitary university status in 2019. It now houses 250 students and aims to gradually increase its strength to 1100 by 2024-25, according to officials.

Placement and Training: The BASE University has an active Training and Placement Office, which takes care of the placement and internship opportunities for its students. The motto of the cell is to support students identify their career goals and provide them with an edge in the present-day competitive job market. The student representatives of the programs work in the cell in consultation with faculty coordinators. They take the lead in all related activities with the support of the University. The TPO not only facilitates the recruitment process but also helps in the up-skilling of students through workshops and special lectures delivered by domain experts from the industry. These programs present the leaders of tomorrow and assure that the students will be an asset to the growth and development of any company or organization and also the country. Many placement partners including public sector undertakings and private organisations take part in the programs of the BASE.

Inauguration amidst Chaos:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new campus of Dr B R Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE) University in Bangalore on Monday 20th June 2022. Karnataka Opposition leader Siddaramaiah made a veiled attack on Prime Minister through a series of tweets on the origins of the institution, founded in 2017, funds and space provided when the Congress was in power in the state. The residential BASE University was set up in 2017 in recognition of Ambedkar’s contributions to Independent India on his 125th birth anniversary when Siddaramaiah was the Karnataka chief minister. He went on to say that the BASE University was established in 2017 on 43.45 acres of Bangalore University land and the Congress government had allocated Rs 350 crore for the land and infrastructure. The BASE has immense potential to grow as an international institution for economic, social and political studies.

PM Modi, along with Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, unveiled a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar installed on the campus in Chandra Layout. Dr. Ashwath Narayan, Minister of Higher Education and Vice-chancellor was present on the occasion.
