Bankrupt Sri Lanka shuts schools and government offices as fuel crisis deepens

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has been unprecedented for the island nation. The crisis has been by galloping inflation and a severe shortage of fuel and electricity. High foreign debt, fall in foreign currency reserves, devaluation of currency and series of lockdowns, high spending by the ruling government, tax cuts that hit state revenues, foreign exchange revenues tumbling down, and massive loans from China over the last few years are some of the banes for the bankruptcy of Srilanka. All these have adversely impacted the economic growth of the island country. Crisis-hit Sri Lankan government has shut down the public sector offices and schools beginning Monday, June 20 2022. The decision to close down is due to severe fuel shortages as the island nation continues to reel under its worst economic crisis. The Sri Lankan Education Ministry has also asked teachers in all government and government-approved private schools in the Colombo city limits to conduct online classes due to prolonged power cuts.
