Candidates who wish to appear for GRE General have to register themselves for which they have to read the following carefully.
Registration Checklist :
- Candidates have to review fees, select right test center and date, and understand the policies and procedures of GRE General Test, before they begin the registration process.
- They are required to check the following carefully and proceed further :
- Test Fees :
- Fees are stated in US dollars effective July 1, 2021.
- Fees are subject to change without notice.
- All fees are inclusive of any value-added tax or similar taxes that ETS is liable to pay.
- In jurisdictions where the customer is required to account for any local taxes due, the price remitted to ETS excludes those taxes.
- In those circumstances, it is the sole responsibility of the customer to pay those taxes to the local tax authority.
- ETS is not responsible or liable for collecting and remitting those taxes on the customer`s behalf.
- Candidates have to refer the table which provides complete details of the fee structure given below.
- Reschedule and Cancellation Policies :
- Test takers can reschedule or cancel their registration at any time.
- To avoid forfeiting their test fee, they must do so no later than four days before the test date (10 days in Mainland China).
- The process, fees and refunds vary depending on the test being taken.
- Test takers have to refer ‘Rescheduling or Canceling Registration’ section given below.
- ID Requirements :
- Candidates are responsible for bringing valid and acceptable ID when they report to a test center, and it must match the first and last name that they used when creating ETS account and registering for the test.
- When test takers register for a GRE® General Test, they will be required to provide identification (ID) information.
- They must enter their first and last name exactly as it appears on the primary identification document (excluding accents) that they plan to present at the test center.
- They have the option to include their middle initial, but it is not mandatory.
- They cannot use a supplemental ID to resolve name discrepancies.
- It is responsibility of the candidate to ensure that their ID documents are up-to-date and available on the day of the test.
- If there are any discrepancies in the name, they may contact [email protected] before registration.
- ID requirements depend on where candidates plan to write the test and country of citizenship.
- Candidates have to review general ID requirements and country specific ID requirements given below.
- Test Center and Dates :
- Candidates have to view test centers and dates for the GRE General test in both computer and paper delivered mode.
- Computer-delivered Tests is offered year round on a first-come, first-served basis. They can view seat availability for preferred date and location.
- Paper-delivered Tests is conducted thrice a year, so they can select the center and the dates of their choice.
- Candidates can make sure to allow sufficient time for score reporting when scheduling their test so that their admissions deadlines for the schools to which you are applying to are not conflicting.
- ETS Account :
- Before candidate can register for a GRE® General Test, they need to create an ETS Account.
- Prior to creating ETS account, candidates must be sure to review important information about the Name they use when registering, including what to do if there is change in name.
- If there is any discrepancy in the name, such candidates are advised to refer the details of Name and Change of Name given below.
- The ETS is required to register for the test, view the scores and access other services.
- Candidates may avail the following services through ETS Account :
- Sign up for the free GRE® Search Service.
- View, change or cancel registration.
- Apply for and view approved testing accommodations.
- Order Additional Score Reports.
- Access the free GRE Diagnostic Service.
- Purchase test preparation materials.
- Choose to receive important notifications concerning the test and scores through text messages in addition to email.
- Score Recipients :
- Candidates have to determine the graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors to which the GRE Test Score must be sent.
- As part of the test fee, they can designate up to four score recipients for free.
- If test takers prefer to send score reports later or want to send score reports to more than four recipients, they can send additional score reports for a fee.
How to register for GRE General Test ?
Computer-delivered Test :
- Candidates have to register early to get their preferred test date and test location either online or by phone.
- By submitting registration for a GRE® General Test, test takers are agreeing to abide by all procedures and policies in the GRE® Information Bulletin, on the GRE website or communicated to them at the test administration for which they have registered.
- Register to Test in the United States, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada:

- Candidates need to create or have an ETS Account to register online.
- Register at least two calendar days before the preferred test date.

- Phone Registration :
- Candidates Call the test center directly or Prometric® Services at 1-443-751-4820or 1-800-473-2255 at least two business days before the preferred test date.
- Such candidates have to remit the prescribed fee of registration through American Express, China UnionPay, Diners Club International, Discover, JCB, MasterCard and Visa credit/debit cards.
- Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only) and voucher numbers are also accepted.
- If they are paying with a paper check or money order, they will need to request an Authorization Voucher by mail.
- A confirmation number, reporting time and test center address will be given to them on call.
- Test takers with disabilities or health-related needs may request for the facility in the exam for which they are advised to see Disability Accommodations.
- ETS reserves the right to add or delete payment options at its own discretion and without notice.
- Register to Test Outside the United States :
- Individuals in Mainland China must register online through an NEEA Account.
- Individuals in Hong Kong, China; Taiwan, China; and Korea or at additional testing locations outside of the Prometric test center network must register online through an ETS Account.
- Online Registration :
- Candidates need to create or have an ETS Account to register online.
- Register at least two calendar days before the preferred test date.
- Such candidates have to remit the prescribed fee of registration through American Express®, China UnionPay®, Diners Club International®, Discover®, JCB®, MasterCard® and Visa® credit/debit cards.
- Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only), PayPal® and voucher numbers are also accepted.
- If candidates are testing in Mainland China, refer to the instructions in their NEEA account for payment methods.
- If they are testing in Nigeria, only Visa, PayPal and voucher numbers are accepted.

- Post - Registration Process :
- After registration, test takers will receive a confirmation email from ETS which confirms test choice, test date, test center and score recipients.
- To correct personal data, they can contact GRE Services.
- Retaking a Computer-delivered Test :
- The retaking a test policy will be enforced even if a violation is not immediately identified that is inconsistent registration information.
- If the violation is identified after registration but before the test administration, the testing appointment will be canceled and test fees will be forfeited.
- If the violation is identified after test scores have been reported, the invalid scores will be canceled, score recipients will be notified of the cancellation and test fees will be forfeited.
Paper-delivered Test :
- Paper-delivered GRE® General Test administrations are offered up to three times a year.
- Candidates can register for a paper-delivered administration online or by mail.
- By submitting registration for a GRE® General Test, test takers are agreeing to abide by all procedures and policies in the GRE® Information Bulletin, on the GRE website or communicated to them at the test administration for which they have registered.
- Online Registration :
- Candidates need to create or have an ETS Account to register online.
- They can remit the test fees through American Express®, China UnionPay®, Diners Club International®, Discover®, JCB®, MasterCard® or Visa® credit/debit cards.
- Payment by e-check (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only), PayPal and voucher numbers are also accepted.

- Mail Registration :
- Candidates can download and complete the Registration Form for the Paper-delivered Test (PDF) and mail it with payment to the address printed on the form.
- The form must be received at ETS by the registration deadline.
- Allow four weeks for processing. Registration forms cannot be faxed.
- American Express, China UnionPay, Diners Club International, Discover, JCB, MasterCard and Visa credit/debit cards are accepted.
- Money orders, certified checks or voucher numbers are also accepted.
- If they are writing test in Nigeria, only Visa and voucher numbers are accepted.

- Post - Registration Process :
- Test takers will receive a confirmation email from ETS that confirms their test choice, test date, test center and score recipients.

- Retaking a Paper-delivered Test :
- Test takers can take the paper-delivered GRE General Test as often as it is offered.
- Testing Arrangements :
- Supplementary Test Centers :
- If test takers are more than 125 miles (201 kilometers) from the nearest centerscheduled to administer the paper-delivered GRE General Test, they may request a supplementary center and their request must:
- accompany their completed registration form and fees
- be received by the supplementary test center registration deadline
- include the name and complete address of an institution and staff member willing to administer the test
- indicate if test takers would prefer another test date or a refund since centers cannot be guaranteed
- explain why the available test centers are not suitable
- Monday Testing :
- Monday testing will be arranged only for those whose religious convictions prevent them from testing on Saturday.
- To register, mail Registration Form for the Paper-delivered GREGeneral Test (PDF), fees and letter - signed by the cleric on letterhead stationery - confirming their affiliation with a recognized religious body whose convictions prevent them from testing on Saturday.
- Their request must be received by the Monday administration registration deadline.
- Leave the test center number blank on registration form, but indicate the city and state where they wish to test.
- They will be assigned to the closest available center within 125 miles for locations that are scheduled for Saturday test dates.
- No standby testing is permitted.
- Standby Testing :
- Standby testing may be available if sufficient space, test materials and staff are available at the test center.
- If test takers would like to attempt to test as a standby, report to the test center by 8:15 am with:
- a completed Registration Form for the Paper-delivered GREGeneral Test (PDF)
- payment (including the registration and standby testing fee)
- acceptable photo ID
- Standby registration is not available for Monday testing, testing in Mainland China; Hong Kong, China; Taiwan, China; Korea; India; and Iran or for those requesting disability or health-related testing accommodations.
Details relating to Name of the Candidates / Test Takers :
- Use of Name :
- Candidates can create an account at any time, regardless of whether or not they plan to register for a GRE test.
- The name they use when they create ETS account will also be the name they use when they register for GRE test.
- So it`s important to make sure that their first and last name exactly matches (excluding accents) the name printed on the identification (ID) documents that they will present on the day of the test.
- If it does not, they may be prohibited from taking the test or their scores may be canceled.
- The Name to be Used when Registering :
- While registering for GRE General Test, candidates must ensure that their first and last name should match with the name as found in the ID Card.
- They must make sure to provide their entire first (given) name (excluding accents).
- Do not register under a nickname and do not register with only an initial as first name.
- They must provide the entire last (family/surname) name.
- If they have a two-part first or last name, they must make sure to supply their complete last name as it appears on the ID documents (excluding accents).
- They have the option to include their middle initial, but it is not mandatory.
- In case registration is made by phone, they must make sure that they are registered under the entire first and last names as they appear on ID (excluding accents).
- If the online account has already been created, they must confirm that the name on their ID documents still matches the name that appears in the account (excluding accents).
- In case of a mismatch, they can contact GRE® Services.
- Change of Name :
- Name changes can be processed upon submission of the appropriate documentation to ETS.
- If test takers are sending scores and their name has changed since they took the test, they can contact GRE Services for assistance.
ID Requirements :
- General ID Document Requirements :
- With few exceptions, ID documents must meet allof the following requirements.
- Each ID document must be :
- an originaldocument
- a government-issuednational/state/province identity card that is recognized by the country in which they are a citizen or permanent resident
- valid (expired documents are not acceptable)
- bear first and last nameexactly
- recent, recognizable photograph
- signature(the name and signature on the ID document must match)
- Country Specific ID Requirements :
- Candidates have to select the country/location where they wish plan to appear for the test to find information about specific ID requirements.
- They are advised to click on the link so that they will come across the acceptable ID card for specific country.
- Unacceptable ID Documents :
- Any document that is photocopied or expired
- Any ID document presented at the center on a cell phone or any other electronic device

- Documentation review takes approximately six weeks once the request and complete paperwork have been received.
- If additional documentation must be submitted, it can be another six weeks from the time the new documentation is received until the review is complete.

Other Forms of Payment :
- Payments may also be made by personal paper check. Make payable to ETS-GRE (drawn against U.S. bank accounts only). If paying by check, the test takers may comply with the following :
- Bank name and its address should be preprinted on the face of the check.
- Check must have a preprinted check number.
- Check must include candidate or payee name and address.
- Check date cannot be over 90 days old.
- New bank account starter checks missing the preprinted name and address are not acceptable.
- Note that cash payments will not be accepted.
Payment Policies :
- A check in U.S. dollars must be drawn on a bank in the United States. By sending check, test takers are authorizing ETS, at its discretion, to use the information on the check to make a one-time electronic debit from their account for the amount of check; no additional amount will be added.
- If they do not have sufficient funds in their account, an additional service fee of US$20 will be debited electronically from their account.
- Contact ETS to learn about other payment options if they prefer not to have their check used in this way.
- If they do not have sufficient credit or funds in their account to cover a registration or service ETS has processed on their behalf, their scores will be withheld and an additional service fee of US$20 will be added to their account.
- If they do not include the correct fee, their request for registration or service will be returned.
- Services may be withheld for nonpayment of fees.
- All test fee payments must be made in full, have the correct numeric and written dollar amount, and be received at the regional registration center (RRC) or ETS within 90 days of the date on the payment (e.g., check, money order).
Refund Policy :
- If test takers cancel their registration no later than four days before the test date, they will automatically receive a refund equivalent to half of the test fee.
- The remainder of payment will be retained to cover expenses for processing registration and holding space at the test center.
- There are no refunds for additional services.
- Refunds will be in U.S. dollars.
- Cash refunds are not available.
- Refunds will not be given if they do not follow proper registration procedures and/or fail to present the required identification documents at the test center.
- If test takers are taking the test in Korea, they have to see the specific refund policy in Korea.
- A refund will be processed and credited back to the original credit/debit card or bank account.
- A refund will be processed and credited back to the original PayPal or bank account.
- If original payment was a check, allow eight weeks after cancellation for refund to be processed.
Requesting a GRE General Test Authorization Voucher by Mail :
- Test takers will need to request a GRE General Test Authorization Voucher by mail if they are paying with a paper check or money order.
- Once they receive the authorization voucher, test takers will be able to register online or by phone.
- Complete the Computer-delivered GRE General Test Authorization Voucher Request Form (PDF) and mail with a paper check or money order with the appropriate payment to the address printed on the form. Allow up to three weeks for processing and mail delivery.
- When they receive the authorization voucher, test takers can register online or call Prometric Services at 1-443-751-4820or 1-800-473-2255 to schedule an appointment.
- An appointment to test must be made prior to the expiration date on the authorization voucher.
If they lose their authorization voucher, they have to contact ETS. Only one replacement will be issued.
