Yuvaraja`s College, one of the University of Mysore`s [YMC] four constituent colleges, has a long and illustrious history. It began as an Intermediate College on June 24, 1928, and was raised to a First Grade College in 1947-48, following the country`s independence.
His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar kindly sanctioned the construction of the Intermediate College in 1927. The great thinker and scholar Rajatantra Pravina Sir Brajendranath Seal, the then Vice-chancellor, lay the foundation stone for the edifice on August 8, 1927. Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Dewan of Mysore, Pandit Motilal Nehru, father of our famous first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharalal Nehru, and Mahamokhopadhyaya Sidhanthi Shivashankara Shastry were among those present when the foundation stone was set. After the main block was completed in 1928, a two-year Intermediate Course in Arts and Science was offered on June 24, 1928, and the institution began its illustrious history.
It has been a recognised academic facility supporting the cause of higher education in the Science field since 1947. During the Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1954, it was renamed `Yuvaraja`s College` to honour His Highness Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar`s engagement with the College.
