Overview
  • Paragon Testing Enterprises, a subsidiary of The University of British Columbia (UBC), was created in 2009 to commercialize the university’s English language proficiency tests.
  • Paragon’s mission is to make its English language proficiency tests the tests of choice for those wishing to immigrate to Canada, become Canadian citizens, or study in Canada at all levels.
  • Paragon administers the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test, although it focuses on the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) Test and the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) Test as well.
  • CAEL CE is one of the best tools for identifying students with the right English skills for academic success.
  • It provides an authentic representation of language use in a Canadian academic context.
  • This feature differentiates CAEL from other language proficiency tests like International English Language Test System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which test global language proficiency.
  • The assessment exam can be taken as an alternative to TOEFL or IELTS, unless a university specifies the submission of CAEL scores during admission process.
  • Test takers read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions, and write a short essay, as they would be expected to do in a Canadian university or college classroom.
  • Candidates willing to pursue higher studies in Canada after 10+2 secondary education, CAEL Assessment will be an essential part of their application to full-time degree studies in Canadian universities.
  • CAEL scores are accepted for university admission at most Canadian and some U.S. universities.

Analysis

Professionals in English proficiency belonging to Edunews have observed the question paper of CAEL, conducted multiple times in a month; get it vetted thoroughly in the light of the pattern, questions / tasks and the time. The professionals offer the comments mainly to instill confidence in the minds of the test takers so that they can face the test without any fear.

Speaking: Test takers come across three tasks under Speaking as specified in the pattern. Two tasks are based on short questions and one on a graph / diagram / chart. The test takers have to understand the questions raised under each task and speak effectively to convince not only examiner but also other examinees of the group.

Integrated Reading: Candidates find as many as six passages; some of them are based on literature and others based on fiction. Each passage raised posers with multiple choice answers. Candidates have to spend time on each passage as per the time given for the purpose, comprehend in toto and answer the questions diligently.

Integrated Listening: Candidates observe questions which have been raised based on passages and conversations. Under each of them, posers have come up followed by the answers. The test takers have to spend time on both of them, comprehend systematically and answer the question without chaos.

Academic Unit A: Candidates come across reading and listening passages under which they find 11-15 questions each. They have to develop answers in descriptive manner by way of essay which can fulfill the ingredients of the standard and quality set for a good essay.

Academic Unit B: Test takers come across reading and listening passages with comprehension questions, under which they have to answer 11-15 questions each. They also have to develop short responses based on long reading and long listening passages. This is in the form of précis writing; therefore candidates have to take extra care while maintaining quality and standards.

The experts feel that the level of the question paper is normally moderate for the candidates who have prepared themselves on a regular basis with a specific objective.
