Section 1: Aptitude and Skills

• Time: 60 minutes
• of Questions: 35
• Type of Questions: multiple choice
• Objective: It tests generic skills often used in undergraduate study, including Problem Solving, Understanding Argument, and Data Analysis and Inference abilities.
  • Problem Solving (13 questions):
    • Solve problems using simple numerical and algebraic operations.
    • Problem solving requires the capacity to:
      • select relevant information (3-7)
      • recognise analogous cases (3-7)
      • determine and apply appropriate procedures (3-7)
    • Understanding Argument (10 questions):
      • Presents a series of logical arguments.
      • It requires respondents to:
        • identify reasons, assumptions and conclusions (2-4)
        • detect flaws (2-4)
        • draw conclusions (2-4)
      • Data Analysis and Inference Abilities (12 questions): 
        • Demands the use of information skills (vocabulary, comprehension, basic descriptive statistics and graphical tools), data interpretation, analysis, and scientific inference and deduction to reach appropriate conclusions based on:
          • textual (3-5)
          • statistical (3-5)
          • graphical (3-5)
        • Each question is worth one mark.

Section 2: Scientific Knowledge and Applications

• Time: 30 minutes

• Type of Questions: multiple choice
• Objective: To testify the candidates on their core knowledge and their capacity to apply it for high level study in biomedical sciences.
• Questions are based on Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

• Each question is worth one mark.

Section 3: Writing Task

• Time: 30 minutes
• of Task/s: 1 (out of 3)
• Type of Questions: descriptive / writing
• Objective: To produce a written communication, without the assistance of a dictionary, automated spelling and grammar checking software.
• When scoring responses, consideration will be given to the degree to which candidates have:
  • addressed the question in the way demanded
  • organized their thoughts clearly
  • expressed themselves using concise, compelling and correct English
  • Used their general knowledge and opinions appropriately.
• Admitting institutions will be provided with a copy of the applicant`s response.

How to register for BMAT – February?

• For BMAT – February, candidates must register themselves for the test.
• They can choose a test centre and remit fee for the test through online booking system, Metritests. 
• Registration is now open and closes on 23 December 2021. 

How to register for BMAT – August?

• For BMAT – August, candidates must register themselves online for the test when registration is open.

How to register for BMAT – October?

• Candidate need to be registered by a test centre (they cannot register themselves for the test).
• They must take the test at a centre that is authorized to run Admissions Testing tests (for most candidates this is their own school or college).
• They may check with their Exams Officer if their school or college is already registered as a centre that can run their tests.
• If they are not able to take the test at school or college, they need to find an authorized open test centre where they can take the test.
• If the school or college is not already registered as a centre, the concerned institution can apply to become a test centre.
• Candidate may ask the Exams Officer at their school/college/test centre to register them and give them the candidate entry number as proof that their registration is complete.
• They must provide their centre with the following information:
  • name, gender, date of birth and UCAS number exactly as they have been entered on the UCAS application
  • the name of the university/ies, course/s and course code/s (if the candidate is applying to a university/universities in the United Kingdom or to Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Singapore)
  • Details of any access arrangements they require, along with the evidence to support their request.
  • Requests for modified question papers must be submitted to exam conducting authority by their centre.

Cancellation of Registration

BMAT – February:

• If test takers cancel the test 2 weeks prior to the test, they are entitled to a full refund.
• If they cancel within the two weeks before the test, they will 25% of the booking fee paid.
• It is not possible to cancel on or after the day of the test and no refund will be given.
• Once the cancellation request has been processed candidates will receive an email confirming the outcome.
• They may note that if a refund is made it could take up to 21 days for the refund to reach the account.
• Some banks/credit card providers may take longer, candidates can check with them if required.

BMAT – August:

• If test takers cancel the test 2 weeks prior to the test, they are entitled to a full refund.
• If they cancel within the two weeks before the test, they will 25% of the booking fee paid.
• If candidates cancel on the test day, exam authority require independent evidence such as doctor’s letter, etc. confirming that they were unable to attend the test. Such candidates will get 25% refund.
• If candidates fail to attend the test without cancelling, no refund will be made.
• Once the cancellation request has been processed, they will receive an email confirming the outcome.
• They may note that if a refund is made it could take up to 21 days for the refund to reach the account.
• Some banks/credit card providers may take longer, candidates can check with them if required.

BMAT – October

• The Exams Officer of the test center will process the cancellation request of the candidates.
• Entry can only be withdrawn 2 weeks prior to the test, they are entitled to a full refund.
• Late entry fees are not refunded.

Fee Structure

BMAT – February

• The fee and currency for the test depends on the location of the center in different parts of the world.
• Cambridge Assessment Testing reserves the right to make changes to these costs.
• The entry fee must be paid in full at the time candidates book the test online.

BMAT – August

• Cambridge Assessment Testing reserves the right to make changes to costs of the test.
• The entry fee must be paid in full at the time candidates book their test online.
• The entry fee for BMAT – August is higher than for BMAT in October because it includes the test fee and a fee that is paid to the centre to run the test.
• There is no late entry fee.

BMAT – October

• Cambridge Assessment Testing reserves the right to make changes to these costs.
• Some centres add an administration fee to BMAT`s entry fee, which covers the cost of invigilation, dispatch costs and room hire which are essential for running the test.
• If candidates applying to Thammasat University, Thailand they need to visit the university’s website for current registration fees.
• Candidates may note that if they are taking BMAT – August, the entry fee is higher than BMAT in October because it includes the test fee and a fee that is paid to the centre to run the test.

Edunews made a request to its professionals of abroad exams to study the available question paper of BMAT. A group of professionals sat on the question paper, vis-à-vis the pattern notified by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing. After studying it thoroughly, the following observations have been made which can be taken as tips to the prospective candidates of BMAT.

Aptitude and Skill: Test takers find 35 multiple choice questions overall which includes questions on Problem Solving (13), Understanding Argument (10) and Data Analysis and Inference (12). Under Problem Solving, they find 3-7 questions each based on relevant information, analogous cases and application of appropriate procedures. Further, they come across 2-4 questions each based on reasons, assumptions, conclusions and identifying flaws under Understanding Argument. Furthermore, they observe 3-5 questions each based on textual, statistical and graphical forms in case of Data Analysis and Inference.

The test takers have to be very vigilant as they have to comprehend each task carefully and resolve the problems by the application of knowledge and skill which they have gained in their studies which includes the lab experience.

The level of questions of Aptitude and Skill is blended with challenging and difficult as the test takers have the onus of attending questions prudently through effective time management.

Scientific Knowledge and Applications: Test takers come across 27 multiple choice questions (8-9 options) in toto under Scientific Knowledge and Applications which is comprised of Biology (7), Chemistry (7), Physics (7) and Mathematics (6). In case of Biology, questions have been raised on the flow of blood through the heart, DNA, mitosis, insulin, water content in blood, lipid digestion, neurons, genetic condition, etc. In case of Chemistry, the questions have been found on redox reactions, methanol, but-1-ene, organic compound, graphene, uranium, atoms and ions, etc. In case of Physics, questions have been traced on the topics electromagnetic radiations, temperature, unit of current, electrically insulating material, electric cooling, wavelength, isotopes, friction, etc. In case of Mathematics, questions have been raised on equations, functions, equidistance, mean, geometry, probability, etc.

The level of questions is difficult as the test takers have the big responsibility of understanding the questions diligently and identifying the best option out of 8-9 related options given under each question. Many of the test takers might stumble due to time wrong decisions in allocation of time to the questions judiciously.

Writing Task: The test takers have to develop their idea in writing such that the selected topic should be properly organized and communicate effectively to the concerned. As per the notified pattern, they find 4 tasks out of which, they have to choose one convenient to them. The test takers have to draw a proposition or implication, place argument or counter argument, either in support or against, bring out positive and negative aspects, make reconciliation wherever required to ease out the problem and draw conclusions logically which can convince whomsoever it may concern, including the examiner.

In this connection, Edunews proposes the following as tips to the prospective candidates of BMAT:

• Be diligent while selecting the statement out of 4 statements given in the question paper.
• Understand the task you are expected to perform for which you can refer the pattern notified by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing.
• Draw proposition or implication on the statement prudently for which, spend time to read the statement again and again if required, but be careful about the time allotted for the purpose.
• Identify the causes for the problems and their ill effects.
• Every such statement will be having two faces namely the cushion and the thorns; you identify both of them cleverly without leaving any stone unturned.
• In an endeavor to resolve the problem in the statement, you need to reconcile the positive and the negative factors tactfully.
• The language that you use should be fluent and flawless.
• While developing, you might encounter certain problems by way of questions which you need to address logically and sequentially.
• The opinion that you express should be palatable to others, therefore they should have basis.
• The general knowledge that you gain over a period of time can be a supportive factor to make the task unambiguous.
• The quality and standards of the task can be stepped up by referring some of the newspapers on daily basis which can provide your insight at different perspective.
• If the prospective candidates of BMAT are able to abreast themselves with latest ongoing development around the world, will be a greater cushion to perform the task assigned.
• Beware of the length of the task to be performed and the time allotted for the purpose.
• At the end, come out with your own by way conclusion which can convey very effectively about the consistency and stability of yours in the venture that you do.

• BMAT calendar for 2022 is notified by Cambridge Assessment Testing.
• Accordingly BMAT is conducted 4 times a year, i.e., February, August, September and October.
• For UK and certain other universities around the world, there are two test dates for BMAT each year.
• This year they are in March and April.

• Candidates who have completed 12th in Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology) from a recognized board in the concerned country.

• There is no pass/fail threshold for BMAT.
• Test takers should simply aim for achieving the best score.
• It is worth noting that universities use BMAT scores in different ways.
• To find out more about how BMAT scores will be used as part of the admissions process, they can contact the relevant institution(s).

• School or college of candidates may already be a test centre of BMAT.
• Candidates check with their Exams Officer in the school or college.

BMAT 

• Results will be released on 30 April 2022.
• Test takers need to use Metritests system to check BMAT results and release them to the chosen institution(s).
• They do this by logging into the Metritests account created to book the test.
• Test takers may note that results are not sent to institutions automatically.
• They need to select which institutions receive their results.
• This can be done at any stage after purchasing the test, though they may want to wait till results are released.
• It’s a good idea to make their selection(s) as soon as possible after the results are released, to ensure the institutions receive them in good time.
• They may check the institution website for any information about when they need the results.
• Test takers are responsible for sharing their results via Metritests.
• Universities will not consider results provided in any other way.
• To share the results with the chosen institution(s):
  • Go to Metritests account(log in with the details used to create the account).
  • Click on the test inside account and select the ‘Share Results’ option.
  • Select the institution(s) and course(s) that the test takers wish to receive the results and click save.
  • The institution will then automatically have access to their results once they are released.
• If they do not make their selection using the Metritests system, their test results will not be provided to the institution.
• Before results are released on 2 March, test takers can add or remove selected institutions.
• After this, once the results have been published, they cannot remove an institution or course from the results website.
• The institution(s) will instantly receive their results but they can add further institutions.

BMAT – August results

• For BMAT – August, results are delivered through Metritests system.
• Test takers must also use the Metritests system to select the institutions that will receive their results.
• They will be able to view their results by logging in to the Metritests account they created to book the test.
• They can then decide whether to share their August results with participating institutions.
• Test takers are responsible for sharing their results via Metritests.
• Universities will not consider results provided in any other way.
• Test takers should only share their results with institutions they have applied to or are planning to apply to.
• To share your results with your chosen institution(s):
  • Go to Metritests account(log in with the details used to create the account).
  • Click on the name of the test and select the ‘Share Results’ option.
  • Select the institution(s) and course(s) that the test takers wish to receive their results and click Save.
  • The institution will then automatically have access to their results once they are released.
• Before results are released, test takers can add or remove selected institutions.
• After this, once the results have been shared with an institution, they cannot remove that institution from the list, but they can add further institutions.
• Test takers may therefore wish to wait until they receive the results, before deciding which institutions to share their results with.
• Applicants must only take one BMAT in an admissions cycle.
• Taking the test twice may be viewed by an institution as an attempt to gain unfair advantage.
• If they take BMAT in both August and October it may result in scores for both tests being shared with all BMAT institutions which they are applying to.
• BMAT results for both the August and October sessions are only valid for the year the test is taken and cannot be carried over to a re-application.
• Likewise, each application is considered afresh, and the score from one year will not affect test takers’ chances if re-applying in later years.

BMAT – October Results

• Test takers need to use Metritests system to check their results using the login details from their Confidential Results Information sheet, which will be given on the day of the test.
• Applicants to universities in the United Kingdom and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKC), Singapore: Their results are automatically sent to any BMAT institution(s) they have applied to in the UK or LKC (as long as their choices were entered on Entries Extranet when their centre registered them for the test).
• Applicants to all other universities that accept BMAT – October:
• Their results are not sent to institutions automatically.
• They need to select which institutions they want to receive their results using Metritests system.
• They will be able to share their results with universities until 31 October , but they may check with the chosen university/universities for any information about when they need the results, to make sure that they share them in time for their application to be considered.
• How to release results to selected institution(s)?
  • Go to Metritests account (log in details are on the Confidential Results Information sheet that will be given on the test day).
  • Click on the test inside Metritests account and select the ‘Share Results’ option.
  • Test takers can select the institution(s) to which they want to receive the results using the dropdown under ‘Institution Name’, then the degree(s) from the dropdown under ‘Course Details’, then click save.
  • The institution will then automatically have access to results once they are released.
• If the test takers do not make their selection using the Metritests system, their test results will not be provided to the institution.
• Before results are released, they can add or remove selected institutions.
• After this, once results are published, they cannot remove an institution or course from the results website.
• The institution(s) will instantly receive the results but they can add further institutions.
• Test takers may note that for most universities, sharing results does not constitute an application, and their results will not be considered unless they have also made a formal application to the university.
• They may contact the universities directly on how to do this.
• Applicants must only take one BMATin an admissions cycle.
• Taking the test twice may be viewed by an institution as an attempt to gain unfair advantage.
• If they take BMAT in both September and October it may result in scores for both tests being shared with all BMAT institutions which they are applying to.
• BMAT results are only valid in the year that the test is takenand cannot be carried over to a re-application.

Review of Results

• If a test taker thinks there has been an error in the processing or reporting of their results, they can raise a Results Enquiry.
• A Results Enquiry should be submitted by the centre, on behalf of the test taker, by completing an online Results Enquiry form.
• If the test was taken at an open centre, the form may be submitted directly by the test taker.
• A request for a Results Enquiry must be received by the exam authority within five working days of the results release date.
• They may note that forms are only available when the Results Enquiry window for each test is open.

How to submit a Results Enquiry?

• In order to request a Result Enquiry test takers need to submit the prescribed form.
• They should receive the re-mark outcome within 5 working daysof submitting the form.
• Following a Results Enquiry, results may decrease or increase, which could affect the university application.

What are the fees for submitting a Results Enquiry?

• The current fee for a BMAT Results Enquiry is £34/€47/$50 per candidate.
• If there is any change to the original result, they will not be charged.

How is BMAT scored?

• Total raw marks for each section are converted to BMAT`s scale, which runs from 1 (low) to 9 (high).
  • Typical BMAT test-takers will score around 5.0, roughly half marks
  • The best test-takers will score around 6.0
  • Few exceptional test-takers will score higher than 7.0
• Writing Tasks in Section 3 are marked by two examiners.
  • One examines quality of content (on a scale of 0–5)

• Other one examines quality of written English (on the scale A, C, E).

• Combining the scores for Section 3: If the two marks for content are the same or no more than one mark apart, the test-taker gets the average of the two marks.
• If the two marks for written English are the same or no more than one mark apart, the scores are combined like this: AA = A, AC = B, CC = C, CE = D and EE = E.
• If there is a larger discrepancy in the marks, the writing tasks are marked for a third time and the final mark is checked by the Senior Assessment Manager.

• Candidate may ask the Exams Officer at their school/college/test centre to register them and give them the candidate entry number as proof that their registration is complete.
• Candidates need to bring their:
  • booking confirmation email (or be able to show an electronic version of the email on phone or tablet on the day);
  • original photographic identification (passport, driving license or provisional driving license, or student ID);
  • Equipment required for taking BMAT (pencil, eraser, black ink pen).
    • To be used:
      • Use a soft pencil for Sections 1 and 2 of BMAT.
      • For Section 3 of BMAT, use a black-ink pen. .
